Project introduction

The game idea, concept and game play was pitched by Sarg design studio to Indic Inspirations as a part of VYOM series of merchandise celebrating the achievements of ISRO. The game is by and large considered as India’s first inter-planetary board game: you get to plan a mission to Mars, build rockets, land and establish a colony.

The design Solution

In Mission Mangal Yug, players operate on Earth to collect resources, build rokets and land on Mars to build and expand colony. In doing so, they face challenges like rocket failures, meteorite strikes, and missed launch windows.

The game weaves real science concepts—such as magnetic equators and heliocentric orbits—into its play. Supported by a “Science Behind the Game” booklet for deeper learning this game has strategic as well as informative game play.

Key features

First of its kind board game played simultaneously on 2 boards with combination of strategy and luck based game play. The Game is inspired by the Mangalyan mission (Mars Mission) of ISRO which has successfully placed an orbitor around mars in the first attempt. The pegs and unique 2 dice are made in wood by Channapatna toy makers. Its a beautiful combination of artisanal engineering an great play for a family.

Perspectives

Game design is a challenging area. Such a project requires skills beyond graphics, packaging or making objects but to set a strategy and building a convincing narrative.

— Yogesh Dandekar

Game concept is very well designed! The board game is all about colonizing Mars and surviving the process. My 13 yr old loved to play anytime and multiple times.
